#FreeWebSearch is important because …
“An ecosystem of free and independent search engines helps ensure that our daily use of the web isn’t skewed to the benefit of a few global players., says @phoefer from SuMa e.V. and @MetaGer
Friday 29 September is #FreeWebSearchDay. The international day of action promotes free, open and transparent internet search.

We just have a broken society and those who are trying to do the right thing, work hard at school seem to suffer the most from this.
Well given on Wednesday a 15 year old girl was stabbed to death at a bus stop for trying to help her friend, today we hear that a tree was cut down, we have had teachers stabbed, assaulted and it makes me wonder what HAS to happen to finnally make those at the top get a grip on the whole situation.
Not just those who are under 18, but look at the whole picture, parents, social media, mental health issues, lack of education due to low atte4ndance, bullying at school, county lines, drugs, gangs, low level crime, and start to send a message cross a line you get consequences.
One idea is, once convicted, to NAME those who have committed serious crimes,
To add to that, commit a crie under 18 and the conviction stays wtth you for life, so there are truly life changing consquences for those who commit crimes (oh hang on victims and families face the same).
We have laws in place to stop discrimination based on a criminal record, so these need to be enforced.
How many more have to die before action is taken. Everyone should be able to go about their daily lives and feel safe, why do so many women and girls especially feel unsafe.
It will probably take Chenobyl v 2.0 before the world wakes up to this, assuming we survive that is
Greenpeace warns over safety of #Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant
International regulators are incapable of properly monitoring safety at the russian-occupied the nuclear power station, according to a critical dossier compiled by #Greenpeace that is being sent to western governments on Thursday.
They conclude the IAEA has too few inspectors at Europe’s biggest nuclear plant – four – and that there are too many restrictions placed on their access.

Seeing the Web Connecting Galaxies Across the Universe
Look deeply into the Universe; the bright galaxies are the first thing you'll see. Surrounding and connecting these islands of stars is the cosmic web. These are streams of gas that flow into galaxies, supporting their star formation. Astronomers have used the new Keck Cosmic Web Imager in Hawaii to image the cosmic web, revealing the filamentary network that connects galaxies across billions of light-years of space. Previously, the web was only visible when illuminated by bright objects like nearby quasars, but this new technique can show even the faintest material.

Well this was a shock today, we often see red telephone boxes, but this actually had a phone in it.
Ratings = advertising revenue too
As we have seen with Russell Brand, he just carred on with other means of getting his words out. I wonder if these people will end up on peertube? If that happens perhaps we need to be ready otherwise the media will jump on the fact they are, give them free publicity and end up saying that peertube is just full of hatred and impact the reputations of those of us who use peertube to share stuff that isn't going to cause massive offense.
On a sort of related note, article on the BBC this week about the number of children not in school cites social media esp in secondary school as having a major negative impact. Bullying at school carries on via social media, mental health is also linked.
We have seen so-called 'frenzies' in the UK, that seem to be organised via social media. Tik Tok claim they are just building communities. So perhaps this needs to be investigated by governments further and laws brought in to counter what is being facilitated on social media platforms.
Social media is a force for good and can be very beneficial to many groups, BUT it also has a dark side, when this dark side spills over to the real world nasty things happen, rumours start about people, events, these seem, in some cases to culminate in violence
Perhaps we need to identify what is happening on a much deeper level, and come up with long term (10->20 years) solutions that fix a much wider range of problems.

The Luddites weren’t backward technophobes. They saw factory owners using tech to degrade their livelihoods and they fought back — first by trying to negotiate, then writing to Parliament, and finally smashing the machines.
As workers today organize and strike over bosses using digital tech to upend their industries, there’s a lot we can learn from the Luddites’ story. I was thrilled to dig into it with @brianmerchant!
