@openscience
Never a truer statement has been said about my experience with #Science. Sigh. I vowed never to take another Science class after I finished High School (Thanks #MarpleNewtown !!) and now at age 63 I consume more scientific journals than my doctors. All due to on-the-job-training in medical research.

So sad it had to be this way.

Writers! Poets! Editors-in-chief @lynnemthomas@twitter.com and @michaeldthomas@twitter.com have read all of the remaining submissions from @UncannyMagazine@twitter.com’s last open period. They will be making final decisions later this week. Thank you for your patience.

40 years ago today (1’st January 1983) was transition day for the #ARPANET. So started TCP/IP and UDP for that matter, as its full time networking protocol. The Internet was born. Here’s my transition workbook from 1982 which I still have in my possession. I wrote a lot of code based on that book. (FYI: picture is from ten years ago - I had less gray/grey hair)

I've lost count of the number of times I've trudged up the hills, sat waiting in the cold breeze and rain, and seen almost nothing.

Today was different. The golden eagle had read my mind, seen what I had imagined might happen, and kindly followed the script.

I spotted it perched on a ridge in the distance, and it took flight, heading towards me, then drifting by, below, lit up by the winter sunshine.

Magic. 😎

I'm enjoying mastodon so far but wow, all the comments about how white it is are extremely right. Almost all the other trans folks I've found have been white, and I know that isn't representative of the real world or even likely mastodon as a whole. I'd love to hear more from trans and queer POC (and POC all up, I've just been connecting with a LOT of trans folks).

Can anyone boost this to help me find more voices to listen to? Or recommend some hashtags? I don't even know how best to tag this.

The art of cut-throat shaving: Because real men shave with a naked blade

Black and white photo of a man shaving with a cut throat razor, whilst looking into a mirror that is mounted on a wooden pole holding up a tent The cut-throat razor is an appealing throwback to traditional shaving. It’s heroically old school, both an objet d’art and a challenge. “It’s the apex of wet shaving,” says Robert Burton, ecommerce manager at The Executive […]

Sometimes I miss Twitter, but then you find out how Elon Musk reinstated traitor Flynn on the 2 year Anniversary of the Jan 6 insurrection & you are reminded why you can't be a part of it anymore.

My Twitter timeline is full of anger. My Mastodon timeline is full of photos of far off places, wine, and poetry. To those who complain Mastodon isn't Twitter my reply is, you're right, it's different and better. #TwitterMigration

Just South of San Francisco, Mori Point in Pacifica CA was our home for twelve years, before we moved to New Hampshire.

Just finished updating my trail review with better maps and photographs. More here: trailspotting.com/2021/07/mori

Well, it can do citations. But all the ones I checked were made up.

Here's what I wrote a while ago for my students:

Ok, this is cool: a team of biologists worked out that turtles can talk. The hatchlings even talk to each other in the egg to coordinate their hatching. Turtle talk is at frequencies not very audible for humans and it can take hours for some species to reply to each other.

“Had we had a bit more expansive imaginations, we might have caught this earlier,” said Karen Bakker, a fellow at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study.

Reconstructed trajectories of galaxies, galaxy groups and galaxy clusters at the core of the Great Attractor, computed from when the Universe was 1.5 Gy-old, and projected in the future to the next Hubble time (23.6 Gy).
