#Reproductive success usually increases when a male mates with more females; a new #PLOSBiology study by @TimJanicke &co shows the same is true for females. Here, @kokkonutter & @Mikejennions explore why this is... Paper: https://plos.io/3X2ALyt Primer: https://plos.io/3QNSaJ3

THIS! Was in my mail today (thanks @Raspberry_Pi@raspberrypi.social for amazingly fast shipping to the Continent!), and went straight on my To Read list here. Can't wait to delve into it!

@Jaden2 I'm not sure if this blog post qualifies or not. Share if you'd like, or don't if it doesn't work for you. But thank you for doing this, regardless. https://donnacavalier.com/should-i-just-keep-my-mouth-shut-rambling-thoughts-on-bravery/

I am pretty solidly on board with the public-private partnership behind many pharma success stories.

But Moderna’s ridiculous proposed markup of a Covid vaccine, when development was subsidized by taxpayers, is reprehensible.

They are proposing a price as high as $130 per dose, when it costs less than $3 to make.

I’d been hearing about the coal-mine protests in Germany, but this photo by Sean Gallup is the first that gave me a real sense of the titanic size of the thing and what’s being protested. Just… unreal.

The young star is AU Mic, a nearby red dwarf star with 2 known planets. Webb’s images allowed the science team to trace the disk as close to the star as 5 astronomical units (460 million miles) — the equivalent of Jupiter’s orbit in our solar system.

The ultimate goal for studying systems like AU Mic is to use Webb’s unprecedented sensitivity to observe giant planets in wide orbits, similar to Jupiter & Saturn in our own solar system. Webb’s observations mark new, uncharted territory for direct imaging around low-mass stars.

#NASAWebb has revealed the star AU Mic in a new light! Webb’s infrared vision captured a debris disk surrounding the young star, showing that it’s likely composed of fine-grained dust. No new planets found—yet! #AAS241 #JWST https://webbtelescope.pub/3ieR2Bj
