Some people believe there's no purpose to "liking" something on Mastodon since it doesn't affect any algorithm.

Not the case.

It does something incredibly valuable: it acknowledges people.

Which is incredibly powerful, and is all the more important *because* it's not connected to gaming any algorithm.

By liking something on Mastodon, you are doing it honestly -- without any agenda at play other than that you like it.

So go ahead. Click that like button for its own sake.

Sadly, our world has an uptick in antisemitism. We must all denounce the hate, discrimination & violence. 📘 globalissues.org/news/2022/12/

@futurebird We have a nest of these girls in our garden Mymecia Pyriformia or the Inch Ant. They can spot you and come at you from a metre away. We just leave them alone and by and large we get on fine.

Today I learned that @GIMP on Fedora Rawhide depends on Python 2.7 (which has been EOL for 3 years). Ubuntu ships a stripped down version of GIMP without python plugins to avoid this.

Hopefully GIMP 3 will be released soon.

Seven years ago, my group launched the Pale Red Dot observing campaign whose purpose was very simple: to confirm the existence of #Proximab, the nearest candidate habitable #exoplanet.

Evidence for its existence had been found three years earlier by myself, but such extraordinary discoveriy require stronger support than most scientific results.

And it gained support, as of today, from as many as three different telescopes and instruments.

The dangers of loyalty in the workplace:

New research finds that, “instead of protecting or rewarding them, loyal employees are selectively and ironically targeted by managers for exploitative practices.”

Well, I think there are valid usecases for putting networked microcontrollers in some appliances.

For example, a "smart kettle" that can notify you on your phone when the water has boiled, and then keep it at a set temperature until you pick it up, could be very convenient.

As long as it's not using a proprietary protocol to talk to a centralized vendor-run service that profits off of user data and can disappear at any time rendering your kettle unusable.

Good morning 🍂🍂🍂

I just took my first sip of coffee. But my fingers still aren't coordinated this morning, typing this is slow going. I woke up, at the urging of my wife, to let the dogs out.

When I finished getting around to leave the bedroom, Ben crawled out from underneath the bed. We usually don't let the dogs in our bedroom while we sleep, so I was surprised. He must have sneaked in last night when my wife got up for something.

I actually asked Ben "how did you get in here?", but he just did the ear flapping thing and stoically stared up at me.

NOTE: The one exception to the dogs sleeping in the bedroom is during bad storms. If there is a lot of thunder and lightning, they get scared.

Really excellent paper by Chip Berlet from 2009 covering the conspiracy landscape and the overlap between left/right. Report argues that many of the stories on the left are effectively the same as their right counterparts, but have been laundered to remove overt anti-Semitism. Also, lots of familiar names for contemporary students of this terrain.
