It's a neat trick! A 10-dimensional string theory looks 4-dimensional at low energies, and the resulting physics inherits structures reminiscent of the standard model of particle physics.

Unfortunately, it introduces other problems. These include (broken) supersymmetry, which we have no evidence for, and – absent a mechanism for stabilizing them – light or massless scalar fields called "moduli" that pose problems for 5th force experiments and tests of the equivalence principle.

NASA announced the crew of the next moon mission. Here's a rundown on what the mission entails, why we have to do flight tests when we've already been to the moon, and why this crew isn't landing on the moon.

"Donald Trump has already begun to identify by name and threaten witnesses, prosecutors, family members, and judges in the criminal prosecution now underway against him in Manhattan. This is not surprising for him. ...

Nothing Trump does is shocking anymore. But it is literally unthinkable that a former president would put private citizens at risk."

"Only two members of the Tennessee state House have been expelled from the chamber since the Civil War. On Thursday, Republicans plan to expel three Democrats at once for the unpardonable sin of leading 'gun reform now' chants from the podium without having been recognized to speak."

Today, as you probably heard, is the anniversay of MLK's assassination. I always find it a good day to reflect on our leadership vacuum. We don't talk about that much. But we sure AF should.

Last week I uploaded full instructions to demo 'Ocean Acidification in a Test Tube' 🌊🌈🧪 to University Geoscience UK's new teaching resources portal: https://earth-science.org.uk/search-results/entry/311/

The world’s most powerful lung is no longer the Amazon, but the Congo forest basin. MO* journalist John Vandaele investigated how many resources the international community is allocating to protect the immense forest. The key question is: can the Congolese boost their prosperity without cutting down their fragile forests? Some conclusions. https://www.mo.be/en/editorial/it-takes-more-one-dollar-congolese-sustain-central-african-forest

In Germany, teaching the Holocaust is mandatory.

It includes visits to concentration camp, museums, etc. They don't shy away from their own ugly history. Yet the kids aren't damaged; they're strengthened, matured, humbled. The U.S. needs to do same with slavery.

Not that complicated.

In 1980, Gaillard published a report on gender imbalance at CERN. She recommended that CERN implement changes like maternity leave, promotion equality, and daycare to address the problem.

In a 1974 paper with Benjamin Lee they predicted a mass of around 1.5 GeV for the charm quark. That's pretty close to the actual value of about 1.3 GeV.

I wrote about “copyleft trolls” after one came for one of my students, and a few years later, I’m thrilled to see what Creative Commons and Flickr and advocates like Cory Doctorow @pluralistic have done to make it harder for them to target unwitting users of photos they thought were safe. https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/01/pixsynnussija/#pilkunnussija

I remember one that required 10 years of experience in Node.js when it had only been around for a few. Not even the creator was viable for that position

In this excellent image by astronomer Alson Wong, there are at least 6 galaxies from the NGC Catalog and other smaller galaxies located in the direction of the Constellation of Virgo. NGC 5838 is a small and bright lenticular galaxy. NGC 5839 is a lenticular galaxy located at a distance of about 56 million light-years from the Milky Way, it is about 21,500 light-years across and was.....
