Born in 1917, Egyptian physicist Sameera Moussa studied radioactive isotopes used to create medical images. Her research “laid the groundwork for a revolution in the affordability & safety of nuclear medicine.”

Concerned about the potential use of nuclear weapons during WWII, Moussa organized the Atomic Energy for Peace conference.

She was likely assassinated at age 35 in a case that remains unsolved. More by Kenna Hughes-Castleberry https://arstechnica-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/arstechnica.com/science/2023/04/the-strange-tragic-story-of-egypts-foremost-female-nuclear-scientist/amp/ #HistoryRemix #science #history

"Why won't you pay the $8?"

Five months ago, before she died, my 91-year-old great-grandmother described to me how, while her mother was taken to the gas chambers by the Nazis, she asked her mother, "Where are you going?" and "When are you coming back?" She never saw her mother again. I was literally shaking while I was listening.

Now, when I checked Twitter, I bumped into two accounts, one "verified," and the other one lost their "verification" yesterday. I'll just leave it right here...

If you don't yet know Professor Sheena Cruickshank, she's an immunologist based in UK & a member of Independent SAGE. When she says we urgently need social media to help re info about vaccine catch-up for teens/children who missed them during pandemic lockdowns, she knows what she's talking about... so adding my wee bit, here, to ask for lots of boosting on this one.

Giant cluster of galaxies found in the early universe... 95% of the way back to the time of the Big Bang.
Images from #JWST exposed the infant cluster hidden behind a much brighter, nearer group of galaxies called Pandora's Cluster.

"The 2022-23 school year has been marked to date by an escalation of book bans and censorship in classrooms and school libraries across the United States.

These efforts to chill speech are part of the ongoing nationwide 'Ed Scare' — a campaign to foment anxiety and anger with the goal of suppressing free expression in public education."

If you see this post, do you mind boosting it? I'm trying to get my PKUTalk.com server to reach more lovely folks on Mastodon, and the easiest way to do so is a #boost.

Thank you very much!

Feels like the freedom to not get shot for ringing the wrong doorbell and the freedom to not live in so much fear that you shoot anyone who rings your doorbell would be exponentially more valuable than the freedom to own guns.

@zleap @Radical_EgoCom here’s an example. What’s wrong with teens doing roofing? I did construction and siding when I was 15 over the summer. Tough work but it was cool to learn.

#Today is my birthday, I got myself some much needed clothes, shoes and a fantastic pair of headphones. I never do much on my birthday because the fuss is always overwhelming but I do feel settled and calm to have lived 39 years on this planet. Hoping you're all well and safe on this #EarthDay
