LOL Meta is assigning instances a reputation

rest assured we here at Hackers Dot Town remain quite disreputable

@zleap @darcher

I absolutely believe he’d kill everyone in Moscow to stay alive and in power

Idly pondering if instances setting terms of use to prevent Meta from using data of users of those instances is a sensible plan.

Does federating with an instance require acceptance of terms put forward by that instance, and if yes, why?

If yes, is that desirable that every admin needs to read the terms of every server with which their instance federates? That sounds horrific.

Do admins have money to enforce a breach? Many seem to be just scraping by to support their infrastructure.

A turning point. Mastodon is a far better source of information on the Russian situation now than Twitter. Follow the Russia and Ukraine hashtags.

Putin Blinks.

Random thought. An embarrassed and weakened Putin is so much more dangerous.

@mastodonmigration I am not aware of any secret deals with Meta. As far as I can tell people are just making stuff up. There is little to comment on until Meta's platform launches.

We'll see a lot of vague references to the Russian Civil War (1918-21) in the coming days. Some things to keep in mind.

✳️It wasn't just 'reds vs whites'. The 'greens', independent peasant self-defence forces, were usually even bigger, and the 'blacks', anarchists especially in Ukraine, were also bigger locally.

✳️It wasn't a 'Russian' civil war. It concerned the 1914 territory of the Russian empire, meaning Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan were also involved, to name a few.

I absolutely adore the whimsical #art of 3D sidewalk chalk artist David Zinn. zinnart.com

Zinn creates delightful “works of ephemeral pareidolic anamorphosis” inspired by weeds, sewer covers, traffic cones & nearly everything he encounters around his Ann Arbor community.

A definition by @aral on #SmallWeb versus #BigWeb

mastodon.ar.al/@aral/110598973

"The Big Web is the centralised web; it is a web in the sense of a spider’s web [...] The Big Web has “users”": one "can fit thousands of users into a single server and Megacorps “scale” to run thousands upon thousands of servers in their farms" [1]

"On the Big Web, you never own your own home. You must rent your home from Megacorps. Most often, you don’t have to pay for your home using money" [1]

BBC'a Frank Gardner says Lukashenko's deal means it is "one-nil to President Putin"

He says Yevgeny Prigozhin expected people to "rise up and join him" but that did not happen. Putin is "not somebody who's going to forgive this", Gardner says. "I think Prigozhin's military and political future must now be over"

Gardner added "deeply embarrassing" for Putin that Prigozhin was able to cross the border and take Russian Southern District military headquarters Rostov-On-Don with nobody opposing him

@AmyZenunim

I'm just waiting for the door to slam. I've really enjoyed mastodon, but I can't risk being exposed to certain people from Facebook.

I've no idea where to go after this. Post and Blue Sky are not options. Reddit is ruined.

At least i outlasted Prigozhin.

Wagner PMC Fighters are preparing to leave Rostov-on-Don

The Mercenaries are collecting their things and getting into the military equipment deployed there as they are preparing to return to the rear bases

The criminal case against Prigozhin will be dropped; PMC Wagner fighters as members of the SVO will receive legal immunity. The Duma will make appropriate decisions in the coming days.

Columbus Informazione quoting Pro-Wagner Channels: Now we can say the three points that were promised to him (#Prigozhin is meant):
- 1. Shoigu's resignation
- 2. Amnesty for musicians (Wagner fighters)
- 3. Possibility to return to Africa

Study of CVs across 30 fields shows that women are underrepresented among those who enter fields which value "brilliance" & overrepresented among those who exit. Brilliance—exceptional intellectual ability—is culturally associated with men more than women.

"Fields valuing brilliance as a marker of success are less welcoming to women...due to prevalent gender stereotypes."

Really impressed by the number of people on social media who turn out to have expertise in both deep sea engineering AND modern Russian political dynamics.

Putin has reportedly spoken to Lukashenko over the phone again and thanked him for his work negotiating Prigozhin's retreat. These two dictators have now saved each other's asses at their most dire moments. A true bloody bond. t.co/pDEPpy22bt
