This is LITERALLY a violation of the first and 14th amendments

We need a special federal agency that immediately pros utes local officials (state or county) who do this unconstitutional crap

The party of “free speech” and “personal freedom” strikes again

Anti-Trans Florida:

An Orange County ordnance states students and teachers must use pronouns corresponding to biological sex

Nicknames are banned as well. Sorry, Bob, Jen, Steve…

This comes after HB 1521 making it a crime in FL to use a restroom not aligned with biological sex

And HB 1069 making teaching human sexuality or gender a crime

Republicans made this a war

🔥️ It took AIDS activists 10 years to break through the societal denial and start getting real shit done.

I hope we have 10 years before Long COVID becomes a society-defining crisis.

Hey Ohio Mastodonians, if you have not done so already, today is your day to vote on Issue 1. Don't forget to disappoint the conservative politicians who want to take away your rights and scheduled a vote on a traditionally low-participation date to sneak it by you! Here's a helpful sign about it. #uspol

The Holocaust museum in Fortnite will let players walk its halls, read plaques describing the genocide against Jews in Nazi Germany, and see photos of Jewish resistance fighters and heroic individuals who sheltered Jews.

Zoom trying to do damage control by obfuscating what they say VS what they mean is a good reminder to take PR statements with a grain of salt. By looking at what Zoom has actually done, you'll quickly see all the times they've flat-out lied.

Remember when Zoom claimed to offer end-to-end encryption but didn't? I do.

Remember when they said they've made joining meetings on macOS easier but actually installed an exploit that made Zoom re-install itself if a user uninstalled it? I do.

Remember when Zoom said they were protecting user privacy but then handed user data to Facebook? I do.

It's always good to have a reminder that what a company says is often of significantly less importance than what they've
done.

Update: Zoom has now updated their terms of service: explore.zoom.us/en/terms/

Specifically, they added a sentence after paragraph 10.4:
"Notwithstanding the above, Zoom will not use audio, video or chat Customer Content to train our artificial intelligence models without your consent."

It remains for lawyers to parse out whether "consent" is implied by agreeing to the terms of service, or requires a separate action, and whether "your" is user-level or company-level. I am not a lawyer.

A more encyclopedic overview is available in Wikipedia [1] (experts can debate which is more encyclopedic, or even better, improve both of them ... ummm, well, improve one of them further). Although mortality was still in the 10s of % or so in the late XXth century, there's at least one Italian hospital claiming 100% cure with no sequelae for patients hospitalised within 36 hours of eating the mushrooms [2].

Friendly reminder to my friends in #academia that in the same way you credit #science plots when you give talks, write #SocialMedia posts, etc, you should also credit artist impressions and photographs. There's a lot of work behind them. Don't take #art for granted!

Dana Hedgpeth: ‘12 years of hell’: Indian boarding school survivors share their stories: Forced by the federal government to attend the schools, Native American children were sexually assaulted, beaten and emotionally abused

"Now a reckoning is underway as Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, a member of the Pueblo of Laguna tribe whose grandparents were stolen from their homes and sent to boarding schools, tours the country to expose the devastating legacy of the schools on families and tribes. At the same time, a major nonprofit group, the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition, is collecting tens of thousands of documents on Indian boarding schools to build an interactive, digital archive that is expected to launch later this year."

This could have serious implication.

Be afraid of what may happen as a result of this.

"Mastodon is far from perfect. But I only have so many hours in the day, and only so many days left in my life. I would much rather spend those precious hours making a open service better than using a temporarily superior closed one. I have seen that movie. I know how it ends."
