Last week our summer intern finished his program. He did a fantastic job! We were able to get alt text written for about 40 of the most iconic Hubble images from the Hubble Favorites collection.

There is still a lot to do — we have over 30 years of Hubble images that need good descriptions — but it's a start.

Over the next few days, I'll share some of the images and alt text, and talk a little about the science behind the images.

@jon_alper Not an idiot question at all! We have a good idea of what the total amount of normal matter in the universe (what we call baryons) should be – even the stuff we haven't found yet.

One such estimate comes from the nuclear reactions in the early Universe, which produced hydrogen, helium and lithium. Different densities of baryons lead to different relative abundances of these elements, so by measuring these relative abundances we can work out the density of baryons. 1/

This is spectacularly heavy. In a world where everything we have to deal with that is important is also so petty and small, this is the type of think that holds weight. We need a lot more of this and we need an attention shift in this direction.

It really is time for the door to close on the Trump season. We can all watch our Justice System do the rest. There are some really pressing issues we have been sorely ignoring.

In China, Possibly the Earliest Attempt at Writing

China, in HefeiOffsite Link, Anhui province, announced that signs carved into what appeared to be 8600 year-old-tortoise shells may be the earliest written wordsOffsite Link.

Other authorities urge caution regarding the dating of this material, and question whether it is actually written language. The symbols may have been recorded in the late Stone Age or Neolithic Age. The symbols also bear similarities to the oracle bone scriptOffsite Link used thousands of years later during the Shang dynastry, but it is unclear that these symbols were part of an actual writing system. The BBC reported:

"The archaeologists have identified 11 separate symbols inscribed on the tortoise shells.

"The shells were found buried with human remains in 24 Neolithic graves unearthed at JiahuOffsite Link in Henan province, Western China.

"The site has been radiocarbon dated to between 6,600-6200 BCE
