The best of humanity is beautiful, ❤️ driven, and altruistic - the people who give their time and resources, the Greta Thunbergs and difference makers who live to fight for change, the billions of kind acts that go unnoticed yet make a difference in the lives of those in need.

The worst of humanity is cruel, selfish, and greedy. It's always been there, only now it's out loud, encouraged, and sanctioned by the worst of our society.

The best of us are fighting the worst of us. Who will win?

I'm working on a #Mastodon tool today that will search for a hashtag across multiple instances and return a list of related hashtags (hashtags returned in the same search, sorted by rated of occurrence.) That should help y'all who are looking for more discovery methods.

While I'm putting that together, check out MastoGizmos: mastogizmos.com/ . It's a collection of a dozen one-page, JavaScript-driven tools for exploring Mastodon and Mastoverse. Free, ad-free, works on your phone.

Thousands of scientists are cutting back on Twitter, seeding angst and uncertainty

Nature conducted a survey of scientists about their use of the platform formerly known as Twitter.
“More than half reported that they have reduced the time they spend on the platform in the past six months and just under 7% have stopped using it altogether. Roughly 46% have joined other social-media platforms, such as Mastodon, Bluesky, Threads and TikTok.”

If you ever need to explain the idiom "irony of fait" to someone, tell them this:

American prisons are so bad, people die in them. And there is a president who spent four years not doing anything about it… who is now going to prison.

'Police said cables in a railway signal box at Ashfield were allegedly cut and equipment damaged, affecting signalling equipment across the network.

'Burwood Local Court heard both men had been sleeping rough next to a relay room where signalling equipment was damaged...

'According to the accused men, the relay room was unlocked and the door was sometimes left open.

'The result of the damage was tens of thousands of people being stranded...'

Don't need to hack with a computer when you can do so with physical tools and the target literally leaves the door unlocked.

While this looks like a crime by opportunists who most likely had no idea about the criticality of that equipment to the entire network, it goes to show how lax protective security is never a good idea for any OT setup, especially CNI.

Just imagine if the two alleged saboteurs were agents of a foreign power which had mapped out the critical vulnerabilities for the suburban rail network and knew what they were doing.
