A new European heatwave dubbed Nero has raised the temperature above 0C at all of Italy’s glaciers, hastening their disappearance, and set a record for high-altitude heat in the Swiss Alps.

A weather balloon launched from Payerne in Switzerland registered the “zero-degree line” — the altitude at which the temperature falls to zero — at 5,298m, beating a previous record of 5,184m set last year.

A Giant Black Hole Destroyed a Star and Threw the Pieces into Space

A pair of X-ray telescopes have observed the messy aftermath of a star that came too close to a supermassive black hole 290 million light-years away. It's believed that the star had three times the mass of the Sun, so this was one of the largest tidal disruption events ever seen. Although the black hole consumed some of the star, most of its guts were thrown into the surrounding space, polluting the region with the chemicals that allowed astronomers to estimate its stellar mass.

This summer’s floods have ransacked cities from Slovenia to India, while Iran, Spain, & elsewhere broil in record heat.
Experts agree: super-hot summer has morphed into a planetary crisis bc of human-made CC, created largely by: burning of FFs. The dry conditions on Maui & the Canadian forests, the record ocean temps. that topped 100 off FL, & the thermometer readings are all triggered by our own carbon pollution, the kindling for these weather disasters🚨. #ClimateCrisis inquirer.com/columnists/attyto

I'd really like one journalist - JUST ONE - to bring this up at the BoE's next press conference.

TESS Has Found Thousands of Possible Exoplanets. Which Ones Should JWST Study?

JWST has demonstrated how well it can analyze the atmosphere of exoplanets, revealing carbon dioxide, water vapor, and sulfur compounds. The hope, of course, is that it might be able to find evidence of biosignatures. Astronomers have found over 5,000 confirmed exoplanets, and TESS has turned up 4,000 candidate exoplanets. With this enormous catalog of confirmed and potential planets, which are high priorities that JWST should be pointed at?

All these red states are now boasting about how they are withdrawing from the American Library Association. They aren’t just satisfied with banning books, they want to get rid of the places that keep and lend them, too. The Christian Right is on the march.

Carl Sagan once warned us of the “dumbing down” of America. He warned of a time when our “critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...”

That time is upon us. We must do all we can to prevent that darkness from taking hold.

@reignasi @zleap @davidho @Lazarou Not quite. The quake caused the operational reactors to scram (shut down) in good order. But the tsunami overtopped the sea wall and flooded the diesel fuel store for the standby generators needed to keep coolant circulating while the reactors cooled down (it takes months). And the quake took down the grid interconnect. If they'd been able to restore grid power or truck diesel in within 48 hours the meltdowns could have been averted.

@zleap @davidho

Ahh Fukushima is a mess. As far as I understand, the tsunami broke the external cooling system (sea water in that case). This caused the reactors to melt down, thus breaking the ducts of the cooling circuits and mixing the flows. Then they pumped water to cool the reactors when everything was already broken. And finally there are leaks from soil water and from rain. All this they have tried to keep in pools for years, but now there is no more space left.
