If you're wondering why there are so few news stories about the rise of #Mastodon, it's because nobody is getting paid to game the media about it.
There's no publicists, no cozy ad deals, no suits, no coercion: Nobody is getting rich off of Mastodon
... that's also why it's so enlightening and fun to participate here
I am not sure what the AI player on C&C red alert was upto last night. I was playing 1v1 against the computer, so started off with the usual base set up and unit creation, I changed the settigs to have about 50 units, so need to move them out the way to deploy the MCV.
Early on the computer attacked me, I did repel this, but the cost was quite high, so I had to start rebuiling tanks etc.
Anyway I built a nice minefield, then started exploring, upon arriving at what should be the enemy base, all i find is an undeployed mcv, surronded by about 5 units.
I could have just moved in for the kill, but decided to just attack the units around the MCV, sure enough this gave the computer the space needed to move and deploy the mcv and start building it's base.
Quite interesting to watch, but this has never happened before, so right now I actually have a game to play as it has built up a decent base and unit count.l
@SiobhanVohn Well, I think I need to shift my focus more to sharing experience of building community and community solutions at local scale.
We need to house and feed people, which means we need far-reaching #LandReform.
The car industry will die when we stop buying cars, which means we need to build transport solutions; the hydrocarbon industry will die when we stop buying fuels and plastics, so we need to build power and packaging solutions.
All this can be done.
So here's the deal: We currently have 2,522 (and counting) followers on Twitter, and we want to exceed that on Mastodon before our Editor-in-Chief @alexip718 heads to Colorado for ScienceWriters23 conference in one month. Can you help us get there?
New study gave $7,500 to 50 unhoused people.
Guess what?
"They did not spend more money on alcohol or drugs, contrary to what people believe, and instead they spent the money on rent, food, housing, transit, furniture, a used car, clothes. It's entirely the opposite of what people think they're going to do with the money."
Congrats to my UBC colleague Jiaying Zhao on this study.
I guess it's time to put "Moms for Liberty" on the terrorist organization list.
Seriously, how hateful do you have to be to issue bomb threats to a library?
@split when I was in high school, several math websites were blocked for "prohibited educational content" and if that doesn't perfectly describe the US education system
My cousin was a 29 year veteran of Houston Independent School District, the last 15 as a beloved principal. She resigned from her job after the announcement of the unreal standards by which unqualified state observers will be judging HISD teachers during daily classroom incursions.
She loves her school, staff and students but refuses to be complicit in Greg Abbott’s efforts to destroy public education in America’s 4th largest city.
Human skin's sensory neurons produce a protein called RGMB that stimulates the cells responsible for skin colour. This could lead to new treatments for pigmentation disorders. A novel sequencing technique was also used to study gene expression and function in taste cells. #skin #sensoryneurons #pigmentation https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2022/09/220920115545.htm

@zleap @knittingknots2 My understanding is that many Russians have already defected to Ukraine. We don't have exact numbers at the moment, and I'm not sure we'd want them right now.
After the initial 2015-16 UK competition the challenge was continued by the European Space Agency in collaboration with @Raspberry_Pi and participation was expanded to all member states of ESA. A new edition of the Astro Pi challenge has opened every September since and you can see the current Astro Pi website here https://astro-pi.org/ (be sure to check back in mid September if you want to participate)
This whole thing about nuclear trains reminds me of something I got caught up in a while ago. I'm a Trekkie, and I ran across a diagram of a starbase, with dimensions (based on size in relationship to ship, etc.). I started a spreadsheet, it got more and more complex.
Those things are HUGE. 2,000 acres of parkland. Hundreds of millions of square feet in deck space. Nominal population of over 2,000,000 people, and that's with low population density. I still have it, somewhere.
Here’s the hidden truth of education:
You don’t know what you’re preparing for.
Your teaching doesn’t know. Your future employer doesn’t know. Nobody knows. Not really. What you’re preparing for might not even exist yet. We •hope• it doesn’t exist yet: don’t we educate students in the hope that they will make the world better by changing it? By creating realities that don’t even exist yet?
