UPDATE FROM GAZA

We are providing surgical and inpatient care, while preparing medical donations for hospitals and health facilities, in Gaza today.

Hospitals are overcrowded with injured people, there is a shortage of drugs, consumables, and fuel for generators. ...

Ambulances can’t be used because they’re being hit by airstrikes.

We urge all parties to respect the sanctity of medical facilities, vehicles and personnel.

On some nights, one of the brightest objects in the sky is neither a planet nor a #star. It is a telecommunications satellite called BlueWalker 3, which at times outshines 99% of the #stars visible from a dark location on Earth.

There are no boundaries to #satellite brightness. We’re going to see a very large number of large satellites launched in the next decade, and it will change the appearance of the night #sky forever.

In the U.K., after cancelling the HS2 high speed rail link, the government promised to spend the money saved on upgrading the existing rail network. After publishing a whole list of rail improvements, they have now deleted the list, saying they were just an example of where the money might be spent.

I'm going to go out on a limb, and say all the money will now be spent on the roads instead. I've just got this weird hunch!

@zleap @mikeday @afewbugs panels installed on a lake were also found to improve water quality (less algae growth) while also (!) being more efficient due to better cooling.

But it doesn't look good so we keep burning coal

"How far did my post go on the Fediverse?"

Interested in how far your post travels on Mastodon, et al? An interesting read from @Edent

Includes Python code if you want to try this yourself. A nice starter project. Well done!

The use of generative AI is being "highly explored" in healthcare and has great promise for a variety of applications, but it needs to be scrutinized closely, said Erik Decker, vice president and CISO of Intermountain Health and a cybersecurity adviser to the federal government. healthcareinfosecurity.com/int

If you are not too keen on spiders, you may not like the look of this.

Photo of the grass field where we play football, covered in spiders webs. There were lots of tiny spiders all over. Try to sit down and you get spiders on you.

Pretty spectacular when viewed at ground level.

“We must attack our enemy with extreme brutality and even attack civilians, because force is the only language they understand and the only thing that will make them surrender to our will…”

today someone invited my 13 year old to go to a mall and his response was jubilation:

"I've never been to a mall!"

this is very difficult for me, an 80s kid, to process

@rolle I think we lost the ability to share knowledge a bit in real life. You can't ask for knowledge anymore, you'll get a snubby "look it up on the internet" thing. and I think the criticizing and know-it-all thing on the internet is a product of it. dunno, maybe I'm wrong.

the fucking Salvation Army sent us paper mail asking for donations

a lot of people don't realize that it is a religious organization (it's right there in the name) with a strong anti-queer agenda. we have friends who've been personally affected by the discriminatory manner in which they provide services and by the hateful conduct of their staff.

donate to local food banks and shelters, not to the Salvation Army. thank you.

Lewis Latimer joined the Edison Electric Light Company in 1884. By this time, Edison had already invented the incandescent light bulb, but there were significant challenges that still needed to be addressed to make it more practical and commercially viable.

One of the significant limitations of Edison’s initial design was the use of bamboo as a filament. This filament did not have a very long lifespan and was not the most efficient design.
