I just learned the exact location of the attack in Beirut. It’s not even one block away from where some of my family lives and where I lived when I was living in Lebanon/stay when I visit. It went off in the exact same building where I used to get my hair done.

My family who lives there- along with most people living in that neighborhood (Al dahiyeh)- all moved there after being forcibly displaced from south Lebanon by Israel. Israel has been surveilling this neighborhood in particular for years because of the population of resistance fighters that live there. Everyone is relatively fine, a bit scared, but ok. When I talk to them they just say “3adi, we’re used to it.” “3adi” means “normal” or “ordinary”
There is nothing normal or ordinary about this. But the sad and scary part is when they say that, I know they mean it.

@DemocracyMattersALot I'm really hoping things don't get even worse in the USA. I'm not able to vote in your country, and the consequences of your elections are massive to everyone else in the world, including Canada.
We're on tenderhooks as they say. Please do your part to keep the world from sliding further into rapid decline, flagrant fascism, and copycat politics by the worst right-wing elements waiting to be emboldened here and elsewhere (France, Brazil, Isreal, etc). ✌️🌎

@luckytran i‘m sorry if I simplify this too mucn but the pattern I see is people utterly underqualified getting into positions of power. In my opinion, having significant merit in a topic (diplomas, work experience, published papers, etc) should become a hard criterion to get access to a position like this. I know people with less obvious expertise have made good decisions but less obvious does not mean none.

The hardest part about refuting Y2K disinfo is how many problems were fixed quietly, in part to mitigate risk of ligitation (negligence, etc.). People have stories they can't tell.

At this point, I think enough years have passed that a formal amnesty - to encourage companies to disclose just how bad some of the problems were - would be in our historical best interest.

How we beat back the corporate takeover of America:
