To celebrate the mass migration to mastodon, I'd like to share a few insights here (and only here) about the various @MapComplete themes that exist and how they came into existence.

First of all: MapComplete is a website which makes it easy to update OpenStreetMap - the free and libre geospatial database of the world.

@zleap @dkellyj I was thinking about "hive mind" and "collectives" as analogies too for corporate social media platforms!

Elon of Borg also springs to mind...

Lot of arguments against Mastodon can be boiled down to : "But I really want a big centralized power that tells me the centralized truth".

Decentralization is hard because there’s not one single objective truth anymore. There’s no more one single way of doing it. There’s not a "good" answer to your question. There’s no official scale of worthiness.

You need to make mistakes, to be frustrated, to discover unwanted things.

You need to (re)learn to be a human.

It’s hard and political.

It’s interesting that the biggest communication challenge facing Mastodon communities is explaining that it’s basically a protocol and a network of independent, interconnected servers, which is what the Web, e-mail, even DNS and most of the fundamental services we use on the internet are, and always were.
It just illustrates just how much ‘Big Tech’ proprietary social media platforms swallowed up and walled off, if it’s now difficult to explain what the internet actually is!

This is marvellous! So qoto.org is an entire ecosystem of free apps and mastodon and peertube etc tie into it! This could be excellent for building serious scholarly discussions on the top of #fediverse, and #qotojournal for example builds a knowledge base.
