@zleap * people ;) But otherwise, yes :) (I’d been attempting to do that for a while but it’s an uphill struggle with the algorithm and, personally, I want nothing to do with Musk.)

Hello there! The National is now on Mastodon.

So if you support #ScottishIndependence make sure to give us a follow and check out our website at thenational.scot.

“I want news organizations to not only set up their own servers but also to start adding share-on-Mastodon buttons to story pages. That will send a message to Elon et al, endorsing an alternative.” — @jeffjarvis https://buzzmachine.com/2022/11/05/hope-for-a-post-musk-net/

@profcarroll thinking this might be useful for you since I know you're thinking of going down the path of running your own instance for a group. ^

For those of you thinking about or getting a start on running a Mastodon instance, you may want to bookmark and use @nova's useful instance blocklist. https://github.com/hachyderm/hack/blob/main/blocklist

@zleap yup - frankly, I'm appalled that no one in Aotearoa NZ's gov't even investigated using locally hosted BBB for schools and businesses during lockdown rather than paying through the nose (with $ & privacy) for Zoom. The NZOSS actually have a companion BBB service to this Mastodon, hosted here in NZ, available gratis to local businesses/education since the first Covid lockdown. It's a no-brainer.

It's money well spent

I wrote a simple guide to the very basics of Mastodon — feel free to send to any newbies who are thinking of coming on board: https://clivethompson.medium.com/come-join-me-on-mastodon-folks-bbb073ff05d2

a week and a half ago i could catch up on all the posts i missed overnight in about 20 minutes

today i started scrolling back after i got up this morning, and now, 9 hours later, i'm still going (currently at 18h ago)

Other fun recovery activity: built a custom Lego train based on the Rhätische Bahn railcars of the Bernina line 🥰 used to ride these as a toddler when we would visit the Swiss family

@adamdavidson @mogul @jeffjarvis @tchambers @Danhon@mastodon.cloud @jayrosen_nyu I should say that unions and other institutions should be creating instances, too. The NUJ in the UK, for example.

Looking for #ScottishTwitter refugees to connect with. Gies a wave! Also looking for fellow #scarlets

Federated social media isn't weird or too hard for a layperson. Email is federated, with hundreds of possible client softwares and thousands of possible servers, if not more! All these manage to interface together with dozens of strange arcane protocols. And yet, it is wildly successful and used by both the most technical people and the least technical people alike.
