The ability of users to control their computing is essential, and access to and control over software is a prerequisite for this. A society in which software is not free is one in which users do not have the ability to use software as they see fit, for any reason, without permission. Such a situation is antithetical to the rights of the users: https://www.fsf.org/

The #GoBike Strathclyde cycle campaign has had a hiccup and ended up without a committee. There should be an EGM in March to sort this out. I for one will be stepping up.
If you'd be prepared to help and you're not already on the mailing list, drop us a line at campaigns@gobike.org so we can send you the meeting date.
I was walking down on of the nature trails when my friend told me to look up and about 5-6 ft above me was this great horned owlet! Knowing that the mom could be nearby I slowly headed back up the trail.
We found a spot at a safe distance to photograph and observe the owlet.
next post will be of it sleeping.

Check out this fascinating conversation with my @UofTAstro colleague Prof Adam Hincks. He’s both a Jesuit priest and a cosmologist, and teaches our course “The Bible and the Big Bang”.

Let's call a spade a spade: moderation on Big Social is unsustainable.
Right now, they're trying to outsource moderation to developing companies.
Which is really just exporting trauma to some of those economically deprived people on the planet.
And in places like Kenya and the Philippines, few people want to work as a Facebook content moderation.
Again, who wants to be traumatized for life while working for $2/hour?

Dear scientists and science communicators: Please avoid hype. Although it might attract brief attention and clicks, it slowly erodes the badly needed trust in science by the general public.
Covid misinformation, climate change denial, etc, that's the result.

Wow. RStudio (recently rebranded as Posit) is partnering with Palantir. Yes, the same Palantir with ties to Cambridge Analytica. The same Palantir that partners with and actively supports ICE and other oppressive surveillance.
This is really not ok ethically, and can only mean a bad direction functionally for the company's software going forward. I never use RStudio for research myself, but it looks like I'll stop using it in teaching.

Here’s a challenging question — What’s a REALLY SMART PUBLIC POLICY DECISION OR PROGRAM you’ve seen a city make, that actually resulted in a more livable, equitable, healthy and/or sustainable city for people? Share enough details for everyone to understand your choice. Repost if you can, to spread the question to more folks. Thanks!

BREAKING: Senior FBI official who led 2016 investigation finding no link between Trump and Russia, Charles McGonigal, has now been arrested for taking and laundering money for Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska.
The Kremlin infiltration of America goes VERY deep.

@RPBook I noticed this other petition:

“Working 60–70 hours a week is normalized and expected; if you don’t do it then you’re not a good researcher,” wrote one participant in the free-text section of the survey. “I’ve seen this pressure destroy PhD students and ECR peers, who work themselves to the bone without any end in sight.”
