Me: We're launching a fishing simulation

Coworkers: Do... do you mean a phishing simulation?

Me: Nah

@stux agreed, however it’s not usage that’s the problem, it’s the algorithm that amplifies hate speech. Commercial social media is the problem. The last 6 years I’ve been here in the fediverse and I’ve not experienced any hate events. However, my faf.social instance is heavily curated and sources moderated.

A big shout-out to all the mods for their work in making Mastodon relevant and useful in this time of crisis in Auckland. Especially @explorergrace! The other place is very good at dealing with such events, even in these days of its decline. But there is no reason why Mastodon can't become the 'go-to' place in such crises.

Use #MutualAidNZ if you need help.

In the meantime you can follow these two 'bird-site' accounts, via bird.makeup here on Mastodon.

@ahumanbeinz @SrRochardBunson it's important to forsake the language of pacifism bc Nazis are scared little men. and the moment enough of us make it clear that we have no fucking problem fighting them, they will disappear, Mark my words.
idioms are cute, but they're not facts. once in a long long while, violence has resulted in saving innocent lives. plus, there's a big difference between state violence and individual violence. one can be a pacifist and still punch Nazis.

I'm just over here trying to process the fact that the guy who leaked damaging news about Hillary Clinton was literally being paid by Russia, and was instrumental in burying the evidence that he, and many other Republicans, were directly working for Putin.

And we're just... I dunno. Going to work and having bagels and shit.

Russia. Owns. The. Republican. Party. Russia had spies in the highest levels of the FBI. Russia had spies in the highest levels of the NRA. Russia owns US Congresspersons.

But whatevs. It's just a literal takeover of the government by our sworn enemy.

Remember what happened during the Holocaust, because it could happen again.

Sad to see the extreme rainfall and flooding in Auckland. Fossil fuels and other human sources of pollution have changed our climate. Increases in heavy rainfall are part of the expected consequences in NZ. Climate action is so critical for jobs, infrastructure, and society.

some people don’t want to climb the corporate ladder, even if they used to.

some people don’t want to go “above and beyond.”

some people want less responsibility, not more.

some people want to do the job they were hired to do and be done.

there is *nothing* wrong with this.

we need to normalize language like this. you don’t have to work 90 hours a week to be “dedicated.” you don’t have to love your job. you CAN be in it just for the paycheck. that’s literally what a job is: payment for services.

this rhetoric of “what success looks like” is a falsity we have been tricked into believing to maximize corporate profits. success looks different depending on who and when you ask… sometimes success is getting up in the morning, and sometimes it’s getting promoted. it’s all relative, and we need to remember that.

1. History is not there for you to like or dislike.
2. History is there for you to learn from it.
3. History offends you? Even better. Then you are less likely to repeat it.

Read this out loud, then read it again. Then teach it to your children and grandchildren.

America doesn't have a health CARE system. We have a health INSURANCE system. That ain't the same thing.

When anyone walks in the door, our first question isn't "How can we fix you?", it's "How're you gonna pay for this?"

That's barbaric.

Good on you! We need more thinking on science and values.

I was thinking a lot about values while writing my recent analysis for the Project:

Getting right is harder than one would think.

Key takeaways include: that arguments based on our usual criteria of /contribution/ and /accountability/ are brittle; that the problem lies with authorship being a vague term (cf. sorites paradox); that we are using posterior reasoning to justify our intuitions; and that reliable intuitions about the actual nature of the emergent(!) source-AI-author system need more work. A practical policy proposal rounds it off: empower the authors, use meaningful acknowledgements, quantify contributions.

@nickheer This is rich - this, coming from @NewYorkTimes The New York Times, who when I sent a request to fully delete my account and remove my personal info I got a letter back from their "Data Governance board " basically saying since I don't live in a state which affords me any data privacy rights they simply are refusing to comply -- since (presumably) they are not legally obligated.

Soon enough, anyone refusing to move off the formerly-useful/now erratic fascist communication platform will be considered a willing supporter of it. That time is soon.

Within the last few years I came across a service that handled payroll for international remote workers. They were incorporated all over the world and helped US-based companies do pay roll, taxes, etc.

And now I cannot find this company. Any ideas?
