I said bye bye to Twitter today.

@jens Let me just say that I am still happy to work at Red Hat :) Our candidate pool for new hires just become a lot more interesting ;)

You know, as much as I like the Fediverse and I cheer it on -- I don't even see it as the end game.

For me, the end game is P2P tech that doesn't even require the web.

Ideally, there would be self-sovereign, nomadic identity.

Connections would be double opt-in.

I should be able to communicate even if the entire Internet goes down, and I'm forced to connect via Bluetooth or sneakernet.

That's my ideal social media -- but we're not close to being there yet.

Amplifying good news as a counter-balance to my usual gloomy trade in UK politics/Covid.

Community buys Gorne Wood - the closest surviving patch of ancient woodland to the City of London - to protect it from developers.

"Over hundreds of years, gnarly oaks, field maples and even elms have grown there, providing a sheltered habitat for slow worms and endangered hedgehogs, and nesting sites for sparrowhawks, owls and woodpeckers."

Every once in a while, I will try some landscape photography.

This scene at the Linn Cove Viaduct is more popular with the fall colors but I wanted to try something different with everything green and the white clouds in the sky.

The Linn Cove Viaduct is located along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina.

BTW, mastodon has thoroughly eclipsed Twitter as the meeting place for developers and clear-thinking users. I don't imagine you'll see too many more Twitter links from me.

So, #introduction time!

Hello, I'm Ellie, I'm a web designer based in Bedfordshire, UK. I do a bit of art/design and music in my spare time when I have the inspiration and energy. I mostly do electronic music but listen to all kinds of stuff, I'll listen to pretty much anything except yodelling. 😜 I've always had a bit of an interest in typography, I should probably delve into that a bit more... Also, I'd buy more Lego it it was cheaper!

Red Winged Blackbird.

My wife and I took a trip to Sunset, Louisiana yesterday. We stopped at a rest area along the way, and I noticed some birds in the area. I snapped some photos. Among the species were boat-tailed grackles, house sparrows, a great egret, and some of these red winged blackbirds.

"One of the most abundant birds across North America, and one of the most boldly colored, the Red-winged Blackbird is a familiar sight atop cattails, along soggy roadsides, and on telephone wires. Glossy-black males have scarlet-and-yellow shoulder patches they can puff up or hide depending on how confident they feel. Females are a subdued, streaky brown, almost like a large, dark sparrow. Their early and tumbling song are happy indications of the return of spring." - allaboutbirds.org

Taught an incredibly fun workshop on good research practices to PhD students. Dear supervisors, just so you know, the most common request from your PhD students is that you will also follow training in this. Yes, you have learned and improved the last decade! And yes, they still want you to do a course like this!

I've seen several people share the #TyreNichols lynching video here. If you're thinking of doing that -- or boosting one of those posts -- keep in mind this perspective from Kimberlé Crenshaw of African-American Policy Form on Twitter

The mindset of Quebec hospitals:

A dying elderly patient can't be admitted to the palliative unit because she has Covid. She's in pain but is denied sedatives because there's a rule that it's only done in the palliative unit.

The hospital yields when they find out she's the widow of the late premier Robert Bourassa.

They later announce they will review their policy -- when a newspaper is going to publish the story.
