The co-founder of the #Vivaldi Web browsers claims that 'advertisers stole the internet from us' in this interview:

xda-developers.com/co-founder-

He also claims that 'Vivaldi blocks a lot of tracking and gets around advertisements in novel ways'.

What he forgets to mention is that Vivaldi makes an exception when blocking ads, allowing those from their partners. They also use a UI dark pattern to confuse users and keep this this setting enabled.

You don't need separate accounts to interact with different kinds of Fediverse servers.

For example, if you have a Mastodon account you can follow PeerTube accounts such as @theatticdwellers or @alliterative and their videos will appear in your Mastodon timeline as if they were Mastodon posts.

If you reply to a PeerTube video within Mastodon, the reply will also appear as a comment below that video on PeerTube. (And comments made on PeerTube will appear as replies on Mastodon.)

If allowed, Facebook will most certainly data mine the fediverse and try to ID and link people to prior marketing profiles.

I don’t know enough about the platform technically to know how to stop it, but if it’s possible, we have to.

Jay Kuo responded,

“I get it. This is all very exhausting and stressful, and we’d all rather be enjoying our lives and not spend our free time worrying about what far-right extremists are planning.

But history teaches that fascism succeeds not because a majority of people are extremists, but because they are willing to look away, to trade away rights and liberties for material comforts, so long as what’s happening to others doesn’t affect them.”

“De-extinction” is not exactly what it sounds like. Rather than “bringing back” lost species, it’s more like creating high-tech lookalikes. And those creatures wouldn’t have their ancestors to teach them how to live. And would de-extinction efforts make humans less likely to worry about species going extinct? It’s a mess of ethical issues. More: theconversation.com/should-we- #Science #Environment #News

Tim Berners-Lee proposed a hypertext system that would sit atop the internet #OTD in 1989, and now we all live in it.

The Superbowl this year offered a free stream with ads, no cable login or free trial shenanigans needed.

Why exactly can't the Oscars do this?

Seems like an easy way to increase younger viewership, still makes money through ads and stop the endless "viewership is down, we need to reinvent the format" think pieces, no?
