Three children and three adults killed in Tennessee school shooting. Weer een bevestiging van een verrotte maatschappij!

@zleap That's a star in the Milky Way. It has diffraction spikes in different colors because this color-composite image was made from a combination of 3 images in different filters, which were all taken as part of different observing programs, and they all have different orientations. So when the 3 images were aligned, the diffraction spikes come out at different orientations in the R, G, and B channels of the color image.

Tennessee banned drag shows to 'protect kids'. They also passed permitless open and concealed gun carry laws - because it was never actually about protecting kids. #ItsTheFuckingGuns

Another intriguing thing about Uranus: Some of its moons probably harbor underground oceans, and at least one of them seems to have active geysers.
Can we go back for a better look?

Earth's Magnetic Field Booms Like a Drum, But No One Can Hear It

You may not be able to hear it, but Earth's magnetic shield booms like a drum when it's bombarded by strong impulses, including those from solar wind, a new study finds.

By Laura Geggel, July 06, 2022

"Every time an impulse strikes the shield's outer boundary — a region known as the magnetopause — jolts ripple through its surface and then are reflected back once they reach the magnetic poles, just like the face of a drum ripples as a percussionist beats it.

"Movements in the magnetopause can impact the flow of energy within Earth's space environment, Archer noted. For instance, the magnetopause can be impacted by solar wind, as well as charged particles in the form of plasma that blow off the sun. These interactions with the magnetopause, in turn, have the potential to damage technology, including power grids and GPS devices."

So watching Horizon (Science program) about Pluto, if Pluto and Charon are orbiting each other would this cause some sort of tidal heating in either or both bodies or does the orbit need to be more of a oval rather than circular for that to happen so the bodies are further away and then closer during the orbital period.

new Horizons has given us a lot of really interesting questions about what was originally thought to be just a body of rock, if there is also at atmosphere would this add weight to getting pluto reinstated as a Planet rather than a dwarf planet. ?

Libraries when you're homeless.

People talking about libraries, and I'd like to add from long-term experience that if you're homeless, those places are vital. Reading the newspaper while sitting on, y'know, a *chair*, hopefully a drinking fountain (No dehydration? Fancy) reading some books, not being too cold or too hot, lovely.

Oh, and you can sort out official stuff, which is handy when you ain't got an address. There was even a lady at one who liked to share food around. Like, you didn't eat it inside, obviously, but food? Nice.

Hell, just about the only things they didn't have were a place to wash or sleep, but you could learn stuff, rest a little, get out of the weather, not be on your guard all the time, (and can't get arrested, cause you're not 'loitering' in a library) and, here's the good part:

You could send your mind somewhere else. Like, without chemicals. You pick up a book and you just escape. That's priceless if you're homeless.

Which is the perfect price, cause you ain't got money.

A heart. A soul. A mind. That's what a library is. And bless em for existing.

Gonna stop there, cause I'm getting all teary and shit.

So @internetarchive scanning books for their digital library is copyright infringement:

But OpenAI slurping all of that to train a model that then can generate text and put actual authors out of business (already happening with copywriters), is not.

Figures, there are no $billions of VC / corporate money behind Internet Archive, why would anyone want to support a public service, right? 🤦‍♀️

IA ≠AI, know the difference!

Looking down Hyde Road in Paignton at about 8am in the morning, very quiet, and can be eerie at times.

Most shops are closed as it is Sunday. But also early morning, when on other day there would be more activity at this time.
