Back in Feb, when Grammarly said they were going to think about incorporating AI, I immediately canceled my account and uninstalled. And now they've actually done it.

I'm sharing because with everything going on, writers might not realize this is happening.

i have literally gotten all my freelance work via twitter and absolutely zero freelance work via mastodon. i lived entirely off of that income for years, and it continues to supplement my wage from employment even now. but ive never aspired to be anyone's unproblematic fave, so,

Oops! NASA has temporarily lost contact with the Voyager 2 spacecraft.

A series of planned commands sent to the spacecraft on July 21 inadvertently caused the antenna to point 2° away from Earth. NASA can longer send commands or receive data from Voyager 2 via the DSN.

Voyager 2 is programmed to reset its orientation multiple times each year to keep its antenna pointing at Earth; the next reset will occur on Oct 15, which should restore communications.

Of course, Voyager 2 will call home in October. What next?

The Voyager probes will be unable to keep instruments powered on much beyond the early 2030s, although NASA engineers may find clever ways to keep comms up for longer. By 2035, power levels will drop by another 10%.

But, the probes will keep traveling in space. In ~40K years, Voyager 1 will pass within 1.6 light-years of star Gliese 445; Voyager 2 will pass 1.7 lys from star Ross 248.

The only reason I'm still on here is that I've learnt to ignore white people's racism and nonsense at a cellular level after a lifetime of it.

I've had white people on here try to correct how I speak, whitesplain what representation means, say that AI images of non-white people are "pointless," and just flat-out patronise me.

And I'm still here.

What if someone isn't as idgaf as me? As militant?

Those people leave. 1/2

‘Something weird is going on’: search for answers as Antarctic sea ice stays at historic lows
Some scientists fear the ‘shocking’ shift is the beginning of a global heating-linked collapse of the ice that could have alarming knock-on effects
“Unprecedented is a word that gets bandied around a lot, but it doesn’t really get to just how shocking this is,” says Hobbs, a sea ice scientist at the University of Tasmania.

Former President Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, the two GOP presidential frontrunners, have both promised a crackdown on colleges should they occupy the White House — a stark reflection of the right's growing skepticism of higher education.

It's not my fault. The post box made me do it. I just gave it the eyes, it already had the mouth!

It was obvious sentience was just around the corner!

The Daily Mail is now screaming for Carol Vorderman to be investigated for breaching the BBC’s impartiality rules over her ‘anti-Tory’ tweets.

The Daily Mail, screaming about impartiality. The Daily Mail, who are to ‘impartiality’ what Onslow Bucket was to ‘marathon running.’

This isn't a climate solution. We can't "you do you" ourselves out of the climate crisis.

We need federal standards that protect workers from the heat, and to keep fossil fuels in the ground.

I hope that Mastodon folks who like to scold newcomers will realize how off-putting -- and damaging -- that behavior is.

Please be helpful, not scornful. Let's reduce the genuine risk of poisoning fediverse growth, and thereby giving social-media oligarchs indefinite control over online discourse.
