“Fundamentally speaking, if you do want to save the planet with AI, you have to consider also the environmental footprint [of AI first]…It doesn’t make sense to burn a forest and then use AI to track deforestation.” - Sasha Luccioni.

A commenter wrote, "What can we do to help?", which really illustrates problems with so much of US journalism since Murdoch.
It's a perfect communication opportunity for climate scientists as well as those doing ecological work and germplasm conservation in this area.

@Probertd8 You mean the Joe Biden who's presiding under a much improved, very good economy, has kicked ass in a few other ways, and despite some obvious drawbacks, won easily last time? Yes.

Everybody thinks about garbage collection the wrong way https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20100809-00/?p=13203
> When you ask somebody what garbage collection is, the answer you get is probably going to be something along the lines of “Garbage collection is when the operating environment automatically reclaims memory that is no longer being used by the program. It does this by tracing memory starting from roots to identify which objects are accessible.”
> This description confuses the mechanism with the goal. It’s like saying the job of a firefighter is “driving a red truck and spraying water.” That’s a description of what a firefighter does, but it misses the point of the job (namely, putting out fires and, more generally, fire safety).
> Garbage collection is simulating a computer with an infinite amount of memory. The rest is mechanism. And naturally, the mechanism is “reclaiming memory that the program wouldn’t notice went missing.” It’s one giant application of the as-if rule.
In this sense, "tracing" GC, reference counting, and in fact even Rust's borrow checker are *all* garbage collection mechanisms. (That Rust's is done at compile time is interesting, but it's still GC under the definition above.)

The whole reason people do not just use Google Chrome is because they want an alternative. Many of them don't know they're using Chromium, but still desire an alternative.
That need for an alternative is what Brave Browser and Vivaldi Browser, provide. That has always been their opportunity.
If they were ever going to leave Google, they should do so now, before Google's so-called proposed standard is standardized.

Another federal judge issues another (temporary) injunction against another state law making it a crime to give minors "harmful" books and allowing anyone to challenge any material a library has that they don't like, this time in Arkansas.
I'm glad there are judges who remember that we still have the First Amendment, even if state legislatures and authoritarian governors like Sarah Huckabee don't like anyone exercising constitutional rights other than having guns.

For decades, the U.S. exported jobs and imported products, while other countries surpassed us in critical sectors like infrastructure, clean energy, semiconductors, and biotechnology. Thanks to President Biden’s Investing in America Agenda – including historic legislation passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden such as the American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Act, and Inflation Reduction Act – that is changing.
President Biden’s Investing in America agenda is mobilizing historic levels of private sector investments in the United States, bringing manufacturing back to America after decades of offshoring, and creating new, good-paying jobs, including union jobs and jobs that don’t require a college degree. His Investing in America agenda is rebuilding our roads and bridges using Made in America materials, built by American workers. And it’s transforming our country for the better – reaching...
