The one in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade seems mild by comparison.

For those who haven't played it, the joke here is that Marcus asks you to translate something (looking up some symbols included with the game). If you fail, Indy will later mistranslate "Grail" as "Grain", making it impossible to proceed with the game.

(Screenshots from the Macintosh version of the game. I don't own a copy of the 16 color DOS version.)

When I was 15 years old, a gay man named Matthew Shepard was brutally tortured and murdered. That was 25 years ago, today, October 6, 1998.

This was not called a hate crime at the time, and it was another 10 years before gender, sexual orientation, and disability were included in federal hate crime legislation.

I'd like to say that the world has changed. In some ways, it has. (Hi! I'm gay! — and I'm an engineering manager at a major global corporation, which I couldn't have imagine would be possible in my lifetime.)

But in many ways, the world hasn't changed. The same intensity and depth of stigma is still there in many parts of the world. We've created little channels of tolerance here and there, but bias and the stigma that powers is are still swirling around us, like an airborne virus barely held back by positive pressure.

Keep it up, and don't let your guard down. I can't.

I love a science mystery, and this is a good one:
About once a year, a mysterious blue flash appears from a different part of the sky, then fades in a matter of days. Nobody knows what these things are. And the latest one, nicknamed "the Finch," may be the strangest one yet.

I was just reading about a man who claims his body only fights viruses on Saturdays and Sundays.
His doctors say he has a weekend immune system.

The Rishi Sunak land sell off on what would have been the HS2 Birmingham-Crewe line has been criticised as ‘spiteful’ sale of land and as ‘salting the earth’ since a subsequent government cannot later restart the project. Those criticisms seem very legit. theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/o

Yeah, our software sucks, but the world is just gonna have to deal, you know? Because this kind of software sucks but we're still gonna keep putting out there.

@regehr @saraislet @kaoudis it feels hard being LGBTQ+ at the moment, but when I marched at Pride in Manchester there was only one hate group and they were fewer than 20. They were a minority, and they were drowned out by the rest of the parade.

The three scientists have now moved on to do take some more scientific readings in a nearby hotel ;)

star trek voyager is a fascinating exploration as to what would happen if a load of people who are into pegging were trapped together and had to deal with stressful situations

@zleap @eob there are statistical techniques and other metrics to compensate. They can usually tell how many individuals, gender and age are in your household from the items you buy. Data mining is scary because of how predictable people are.

@zleap somebody needs to arrange a group testing session. Funded by government grants, obviously.

In the name of research, of course, I've been scoffing mince pies since 30th of August. Hey, it's not my fault the grocery stores decide to stock up so early!

So far, Sainsbury's Taste the Difference range is leading for both flavour and casing. Particularly their frangipane variant. Especially warmed up - the frangipane goes even softer and slightly gooey when heated.

Their more basic own-brand are terrible, though. Dry pastry and not enough filling.

@SamYourEyes @zleap I think my question is if you are going to regulate a bat or baton why wouldn't you regulate the weapon that kill multiple people from a distance.

How Canadians confuse the world:

- We measure outside temp in Celsius and oven temp in Fahrenheit.

- Length in meters and our height in feet.

- Cheese is weighed in kilograms but people are weighed in pounds.

- We speak like Americans, spell like Brits and randomly throw in French words.
