Laura Armstrong, "Palestinians are being slaughtered"

Anna Soubry, "Most people like me are on the edge of saying, how much worse does this have to get before I cannot support what Israel is doing any longer"

Peter Kyle, "People in Gaza are dying because of lack of medicine"

Keme Nzerem, "Are they not dying because of the Israeli bombs?"

Peter Kyle ignores the question

Keme Nzerem, "How many Palestinian children need to die before Labour calls for a ceasefire?"

Peter Kyle again ignores the question

Rishi Sunak wants us to believe that the U.K. can be a global leader in AI

But Rishi Sunak knows renewables are more efficient/productive and choses to prioritise fossil fuels

So how can we trust Rishi Sunak to do the right thing with AI when he does the wrong thing with energy 🤷‍♂️

@zleap @bobjmsn yes, the Scottish FM has been vocal since day 1. He has written to the U.K. Gov and to Starmer and has been ignored. What I think of Sunak and Starmer cannot be published.

✍️ Firefox Isn't Just a Browser; It Is a Web Resistance, and It's Now at Version 119

I'm baffled as to why Google Chrome still dominates the browser market when Firefox, a faster and privacy-conscious open-source browser, is readily available!

In the previous update, Firefox introduced a long-awaited feature – an automatic and customizable built-in translation. With this addition, Firefox fills a significant gap that was once held against it.

Now, with the latest update, Firefox 119 not only surpasses Chrome (I'm confident it does) but also competes with PDF editors. With great excitement, let's explore what this latest version has in store.

"While I believe in self-defense, fighting in Gaza taught me that if my government doesn’t change its approach from crushing Palestinian hope to committing to Palestinian independence, not only will this war kill an untold number of Israelis & Palestinians in addition to the thousands who already have died, but it also will not decisively end terror. A ground invasion is doomed to failure."

"When my Israeli infantry unit arrived at the first village in Gaza, in July 2014, we cleared houses by sending grenades through windows, blowing doors open & firing bullets into rooms to avoid ambush & booby traps. We were told Palestinian civilians had fled.

I realized this wasn’t true as I stood over the corpse of an elderly Palestinian woman whose face had been mutilated by shrapnel. She had been lying on the sand floor of a shack, in a pool of blood.

#WritersCoffeeClub 10/30. Did the education system inspire you or put you off writing?

My German teacher in 7th grade gave me extra homework - writing little essays.

It wasn't punishment at all. I started to love being able to express myself in words, telling stories, teaching about experiences.

It made me love language as a tool.

And then, in 9th grade, I fell in love with English. I never looked back.

The International Ultraviolet Explorer observer's control panel. IUE was the first large UV space telescope, and it was operated like a classical ground telescope. Observers would travel to the control room and take an active part in running the observation. Apparently (from talking with ppl who used it) this was a total mess, and not followed with subsequent space telescopes.

@Itty53 @matthewtoad43 @scottsantens We need more non-profits & cooperatives. Our economic model focuses on for-profit corporations, but it is precisely the for-profit model that is guilty of rent-seeking behavior. Cooperatives in particular resolve a lot of those problems by (1) aligning incentives, since the would-be rent payers and rent seekers are the same group, and (2) democratizing both the control of the organization and the payout of any earnings.

The parallels between UBI and cooperatives is interesting, too. If you think of the entire national economy as a cooperative endeavor to provide material needs and wants to citizens, then a UBI is analogous to the dividend paid out on that to the shareholders.

From a pediatrician in Gaza: "When the generators fall silent, we will be relegated to practicing medieval-level medicine. Without an urgent resupply of fuel, the lights will go out permanently, and our hospital could turn into a morgue." Gift link: nytimes.com/2023/10/29/opinion
