@cwebber Am I strange for actually finding the use of pointer in the description to be quite enlightening?

@loke likewise the description of empathy in I Am A Strange Loop as your internal emulator of other people that becomes more fine grained as you come to know them more, until they become part of your own mental processes

@cwebber Oh, that makes sense. 🙂

I wonder if there are any good examples of cases where some common process is explained using a CS analogy which would make sense to us, but the exact same analogy would work in the reverse direction in order to explain a CS concept to a non-computer person?

Just want to check in here because, as an alter kacker I no longer have confidence in the extent to which we in social media understand things in common:
We all agree that there is a dimension of the definition of "euphemism" that this comic totally ignores, right?
There's the whole moral/aesthetic dimension...
Anyone relying solely on this comic would *not* be able to distinguish a euphemism from a pronoun...

merriam-webster.com/dictionary

@baslow @loke sure. the comic is still showing something interesting/useful, even if it is a comic that is not covering the complete idea, and also primarily designed to be funny :)

@cwebber @loke
Yep. I've just found myself unnerved too many times, on social media, by instances in which I've *seemed* to be in agreement with people, *seemed* to share a common set of understandings, only to find that our outlooks diverge wildly. This can happen IRL as well, of course, but it seems to happen to me more often online. So I feel more need to check explicitly here...

@2ck @cwebber @loke
Thanks! Enfield's name keeps popping up in my reading but, I confess, I haven't actually read him yet. Maybe listening to the podcast will push me to do so.
The books listed on nickenfield.org/ certainly indicate that he's addressing the right questions within (IMO) frameworks likely to afford insights.
