🧵 1/15
In advance of the next inevitable uproar over a BIPOC person being cast in a fantasy movie/TV show, I will invite everybody to pre-chill out and review similar “non-accuracies” that have occurred to canonically Brown and Black skinned characters.

2/15 R'as Al Ghul: Batman arch-enemy described as a child born in North Africa from dispossessed Arabian and Chinese nomads. Depicted with Arabian features in the comics but typically played by white actors in live action versions.

3/15 In Mark Millar's edge-boy wet dream of a comic "Wanted" the character Fox is Black and her character design is based on a famous Black actress In the live-action version of “Wanted” she is played by a white actor.

In a 2019 interview, Gregory Allen Howard, screenwriter for the bio-pic "Harriet" said that Hollywood executives wanted her to be played by Julia Roberts. When it was pointed out that Julia may not be the right person to portray a historically important Black figure the executive responded "It was so long ago. No one is going to know the difference."

5/15 The mythological character Andromeda is the daughter of the King of Ethiopia.

6/15 Yet for centuries, Andromeda is depicted as white skinned. In the movie Clash of the Titans (1981) and the remakes she is portrayed by white actors

7/15 In 2010 Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (Disney movie BTW), characters who's origins are from what is now called Iran are played by primarily white actors.

8/15 The story of "Ghost In The Shell" takes place in the fictional Japanese Niihama Prefecture. However a white actor played the lead in the 2017 live action version.

@Alikufogo honestly, I had less of a problem with this casting. Motoko has had her whole body replaced, so why not her face? Also, in the same movie, I believe she's portrayed by a Japanese actress when she's younger.

I never saw this movie though😛
