The simple answer is they found another solution; they booked a different airline, or decided a 3 hour drive was better than waiting 6 hours for a connection.
Turns out you don't have to be in the airport to buy a ticket. And once you do have a boarding pass - they just let you in.
@Biggles hrm. Another airline does make sense (although I still wonder how one gets *into* the airport without a ticket in the first place - maybe whatever they came in with is one they canceled to try for standby elsewhere)
