When I'm writing, it can get pretty intense. I still need to figure out the right way for me to maintain a steady writing pace. I would love to be able to write 10,000 words a day but it's not realistic. I have probably only done this twice, and that was last year. Half that, staggered throughout the day is more realistic.

@sim Stephen King says his strategy was to give himself a quota of words to do each day and to write at least that many no matter what. Even if it was absolute rubbish that he would end up throwing out he would still write it. He goes on to say that over time this strategy helped him become able to acheive his quota with all decent material. And of course on days he was feeling it he would go way over the quota.

@Clementulus Yeah, I've also been setting myself word targets. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If I don't manage it, then I add it to the next day quota. I really wish that I could go back to the productivity of when I tried this last year but that has been difficult. My life really needs to be settled to do this.
