I was thinking more of the fact that the USA was founded on conquest and slavery. Those attitudes have evolved over time but supremacist attitudes have always remained influential. For instance, after the civil war, the neo-Confederates still ran the Southern states and even spread their attitudes into the north. Even after the civil rights movements of the 1960s, these people only grudgingly conceded that they couldn't be racist in polite company. But it's not just southern racism. There's always been a deep elitism and contempt for people who don't fit into the dominant institutions -- and those attitudes very easily develop into fascism.
