The moral panic about AI & cheating is the same as the panic over proctoring & cheating is the same as the panic that led to plagiarism-detection software.
The vast majority of students DO NOT want to cheat. They want to learn. The lack of trust undermines education.
@joshua_r_eyler Is in the 'lack of trust' that undermines education, or is it the conflation of education with employment certification.
@DecaturNature Well, I think there are lots of things undermining education at the moment.
@joshua_r_eyler My point is that cheating is only/mainly a problem because many opportunities in life are allocated based on grades. If education wasn't being used as a credential, then students wouldn't be as motivated to cheat and teachers wouldn't have to worry about catching it in the name of fairness/meritocracy. The lack of trust is a symptom of an overly competitive society not something that developed within the educational system itself. Maybe education is a good place to push back against that excessive competition, but I think you have to be clear about how radical it is to do so, and not present academic cheating as purely an internal issue of educational institutions.
