@JoshuaACasey you don't even need a domain: free subdomains (e.g. eu.org) and even free second-level domains are available e.g. .tk, .gq, .ml, .ga, and .cf are available for free through https://www.freenom.com.
@KayFaraday I've tried testing mastodon on a $5/month digitalocean vps and it seemed to struggle. (domain isn't a problem since I already have domain(s))
@JoshuaACasey try not using DO then :) OVH gives you double the disk and double the RAM for that price. although maybe CPU was your bottleneck? what did your profiling reveal?

@JoshuaACasey all you really need is a domain and a VPS. You can run pleroma or even masto (although pleroma can handle more users with fewer resources) on a $5/month VPS, and some domains are $10 / year, so that's <$6/month.
