I really don't understand why some professors are so dismissive of their colleagues who are concerned about ChatGPT being used by students to cheat.
That's NOT a baseless concern. There ARE students who will use this technology to cheat - I'm a student and I know this perfectly well. It strikes me as far more strange that some profs think this is a pointless concern only worthy of ridicule.

I played with ChatGPT over break, plugging in prompts from past courses, both grad & undergrad. The assessment that when it's bad, it's *dramatically* bad, matches my experience. Most of the answers read like wiki articles. And the more sophisticated/niche the question/topic, the worse it got.
I suspect it's only going to get better as time goes on. My prof is fairly worried about it. He spent a solid 15 minutes of our first class talking about it.
