It's almost like algorithmic curation is actually really important for the user experience and perhaps we shouldn't ban it simply because we don't understand how it works hm.

@jmiers230 @neil Jess and I don't disagree often, but this is one area where we absolutely do.

My Twitter experience was absolutely destroyed by the introduction of algorithms. It destroyed the diversity of voices I got to encounter and definitely suppressed by own visibility. Only by using Tweetdeck was I at least able to mitigate the former some what.

So absolutely thrilled to be here where connections are based on linear self-curation and control, which was the Twitter I fell in love with.

Interesting. Maybe I need to shift my perspective when I'm on here. I'm so used to the Twitter feed. This is an opportunity to hear from new voices and communities.

I guess the middle ground here would be an option for the user to customize their feeds. If I want the Twitter algo, I could set it up myself. Same with your preferences.

FWIW my original reply was a subtweet (subtoot?) regarding Gonzalez...

@jmiers230 @cathygellis @neil In theory, there's nothing preventing someone from forking the masto code and running a server with a curated algorithm.

In practice, though, you can follow hashtags and look at who people you follow follow themselves to add to your list. It takes a little time, but it's not that hard to get to the sweet spot of content where Twitter was.

That said, though, I always used Twitter in "latest tweets" mode, so this transition was a bit easier for me.
