@LouisIngenthron again, you don't need to upload any code to utilize conversational LLMs.

And obviously! It's unprofessional to pass off low-quality code no matter where it came from. That's not an LLM exclusive problem.

Who said anything about creating whole cloth solutions?

I get the sense that your objections are based on pride. I hope I'm wrong.

@greg Do you really think the AI, that runs on their servers, is able to provide suggestions relevant to your code base without the plugin uploading any code to them?

@LouisIngenthron yes as long as your codebase isn't written in some private proprietary language

@greg Then you might want to go back and review the terms of use for those services because they explicitly warn you about this!

@LouisIngenthron what are you talking about? I'm using conversational LLMs without sharing private code. The same way I can use Google etc without providing private code.

@greg Google and StackOverflow don't customize their answer to match my context.

If you're asking the conversational AI to work in a private code base, it will absolutely upload parts, if not all, of that codebase to customize the answers to match the codebase's style, format, and spec.

The minute you've enabled that plugin in your project, you're violating your clients' privacy.

@LouisIngenthron you either don't understand how ChatGPT works or how I'm using it. If I ask a conversational LLM to produce a specific function, it doesn't magically have access to all my code. You don't need to use VSC plugins to get benefit from using a conversational LLM. For the 10th time, it's just one of many tools at your disposal. Don't let your pride stop you from utilizing new tools.

Follow

@greg Creating a function in a vacuum is not useful for any real-world programming outside of a classroom.

Also, please don't attempt to tell other people their intentions. It just makes you sound like an asshole.

I'm bound by professionalism, not pride. And it doesn't hold me back, it helps me excel.

I do experiment with these tools, but I won't haphazardly use them in production until their many issues have been resolved.

@LouisIngenthron I don't mean to be an arsehole but your inability to get any value from conversational LLMs (or even consider the possibility of getting value) is either pride, misunderstanding of the tool, or lack of imagination.

@greg No, I have explained what it is to you at least twice now, and you keep ignoring that to make your own assumptions.

At this point, I can only assume you're trolling me.

@LouisIngenthron I'm not trolling you. I'm genuinely interested how someone that works in our industry could confidently say that they can not benefit from conversational LLMs.
And before you say *privacy*, I'll remind you that you can use these tools without uploading existing code. Use it the same way you might use Stackoverflow or Google. And before you say *professionalism* I'll also remind you that you don't have to blindly c&p code from LLMs the same way you wouldn't blindly c&p code from Sackoverflow.
