@LouisIngenthron again, you don't need to upload any code to utilize conversational LLMs.

And obviously! It's unprofessional to pass off low-quality code no matter where it came from. That's not an LLM exclusive problem.

Who said anything about creating whole cloth solutions?

I get the sense that your objections are based on pride. I hope I'm wrong.

@greg Do you really think the AI, that runs on their servers, is able to provide suggestions relevant to your code base without the plugin uploading any code to them?

@LouisIngenthron yes as long as your codebase isn't written in some private proprietary language

@greg Then you might want to go back and review the terms of use for those services because they explicitly warn you about this!

@LouisIngenthron what are you talking about? I'm using conversational LLMs without sharing private code. The same way I can use Google etc without providing private code.

@greg Google and StackOverflow don't customize their answer to match my context.

If you're asking the conversational AI to work in a private code base, it will absolutely upload parts, if not all, of that codebase to customize the answers to match the codebase's style, format, and spec.

The minute you've enabled that plugin in your project, you're violating your clients' privacy.

@LouisIngenthron @greg you don’t need to use plugins plugged in your code base. You can ask chatgpt to generate code doing X in language Y. It’s a chat in a browser, it has no access to your client code.

@jerome As I said to him, that's useful for classroom assignments but not serious software engineering work. In the wild, nothing runs in isolation.
