@oliphant @seb321 I didn't compare the homeless to Nazis. I just used them as an example of people ignoring people they find distasteful. I.e. if they can ignore the homeless, they can certainly ignore the Nazis.
I agree with your second point. Refusing to host them is an exercise of free speech/association. But the example being discussed was a public street, owned collectively by the people via the government. In that forum, no person or idea can, or should, be silenced
@oliphant @LouisIngenthron Not only that, but if I decide to protest against fascists in the street, the police will come for me. Why? Because governments are full of fascists who are disguised as all shades of politics because that’s how they get power in a democracy. Their goal is to move the whole apparatus towards fascism by reframing every contrary view as undemocratic and unpatriotic. They want fascists to have freedom of speech. Therefore, we absolutely don’t.
@oliphant @LouisIngenthron the bottom line is, if your way works - why are we slipping into fascism even within living memory of the last time it had to be stomped down on a global scale? If we allow it oxygen, it will always rise and then you can have your free speech debate in front of a long pit full of bodies.
@seb321 @oliphant We're slipping towards fascism because people, like you, have so demonized their ideological opponents that they're willing to strip them of their rights, which is a slippery spiral.
Do you really not realize that by advocating for the silencing of your enemies that you're playing right into the fascism game yourself?
@oliphant @LouisIngenthron Yeah mea culpa 🙄 Good luck with your protests.
@oliphant @LouisIngenthron I’m not sure where this street of yours is. In any streets I know, censorship absolutely applies - if a homeless person starts shouting in the faces of passers by, how long before they are arrested and removed? If I exercise my freedom by taking off my clothes, how long will I be allowed to continue? There is no freedom of speech, there are just privileged people who choose to allow fascists and racists to keep recruiting in public spaces.
