I was asked by my department head if I was interested in being the faculty representative at the big women in computing conference in Orlando. I replied that as a trans woman it's now “functionally illegal" for me to go to Florida. As in technically not illegal, but impossible to do so in a way that both complies with the law and is safe. Shocked that it's come to this. #Transgender #Florida

@fullyabstract omfg has Grace Hopper (or Janelle Monae for that matter (holy crap)) said anything about this?

I mean, I know conferences book locations years in advance, but they could at least acknowledge the situation.

@fullyabstract They have a statement: ghc.anitab.org/about/living-ou

I suspect the part they are saying out loud if that they would have lost lots of money if they moved it. (I think that’s a bad choice.)

Are they saying that Tampa can override state law, or shall I ask them to share the drugs they’re on with the rest of us?

@godofbiscuits @ZiggyTheHamster @fullyabstract @kataclyst Except it happens all the time. Many cities decriminalized marijuana while it was still illegal at the state level. They do it largely through prosecutorial discretion (which is why our governor is currently removing elected attorneys general, straight from the fascist playbook).
