@aras It gets BETTER!! They're gonna send a bill to Valve and Apple for a trillion dollars!!
#unity #gamedev

@shana @aras I don't see how this is going to work — there's no agreement between Valve and #Unity. Someone like Apple isn't about to say "well if this other developer we've never met agreed to your terms and conditions then sure, I guess we owe you billions of dollars, seems legit".

@andrewt @shana @aras The only way it would work is if they had a kill-switch in the runtime. If they could say to Valve "pay up or we make all Steam-distributed Unity-based games fail overnight", it might work, similar to what Disney recently did with Spectrum.

@LouisIngenthron @shana @aras I mean sure, that might work, but it's not them being allowed to charge a fee, it's just straightforward extortion, it's literally just a protection racket where they smash your stuff if you don't pay them off.

@andrewt Correct. And I wouldn't put it past Unity's current leadership.

@andrewt Although, fwiw, I don't think they expect the platforms to actually foot the bill. I think they'd extort them into basically doing their collections for them.

@LouisIngenthron yeah, the bit where they say "the devs have to pay until the platforms do" is very kind of landlord-brain, like, "someone has to give us money and we don't care who" is pretty understandable as a motivation but it doesn't make sense as an enforceable contract, realistically #unity aren't about to sue apple for $100bn only to immediately divvie it up between a bunch of indie devs and f2p whale hunters, so in practice it means the devs pay because they can't afford lawyers good and the platforms just gently facepalm until unity go away
