I have the feeling many new people from Twitter (including myself at the beginning) seem to think they are being blamed and scolded for accidentally picking an instance that might not be so good for their interests or had some trouble in the past, or for not understanding a feature, and then get defensive.

You are not getting scolded.
Many people on here are not instantly mad at you and aren't dogpiling on you for every mistake.

You are getting help how to make the most of being here and find a community that suits your needs.

You are getting advice for how to find more people or adjust settings in a way you can navigate this site better.

You are not getting attacked or blamed for things you couldn't possibly know. You get advice you can take or ignore, whatever suits your fancy. :)

@Sirablopp While I agree with your point, it's also true that Mastodon is very scoldy in general.

I regularly see threads on this platform about how awful it is that "reply guys" give "unsolicited advice". It's not just new users they scold, it's anyone who interacts with them before they give their permission.
