I'd say the better distinction would be: People who truly believe in free speech don't try to use it as a shield against criticism.

(Also, it's weird that the OP insinuated that free speech people *like* defending Nazis. We use Nazis as the go-to example precisely because they are the very definition of the worst shitheads who nobody wants to listen to.)
