Dozens of US states, in a federal court complaint filed in California, sue Meta Platforms and its Instagram unit, accusing them of contributing to a youth mental health crisis, alleging the public was misled about the substantial dangers of the social media platforms and knowingly induced young children and teenagers into addictive and compulsive use.

@w7voa Are they also suing Dungeons & Dragons and Rock & Roll music?

@LouisIngenthron @w7voa No, because those are positive influences in society and have not been directly tied to mental health issues in peer-reviewed medical journals. First citation found after 5 seconds on DuckDuckGo: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/315091

@bhawthorne @w7voa Oh, please. Literally anything will give you mental health issues if you don't have enough self-control to use it in moderation. Look at sports and how toxic people get over that. Nobody is trying to sue the NFL for mental anguish.

@LouisIngenthron @bhawthorne @w7voa you may not realize that FB has literally hired psychologists specializing in addition, in order to study how to make its platform more addictive. The comparison to the tobacco industry is apt.
