Annual family cookie decorating party last night. Of course, I made a few Brown-Tail UPS 767 cookies (with position lights) and a Mickey °o°.

Ever wonder why airplanes have Christmas-themed position lights? Here’s why:

@aerosavvy I do often wonder why the colors used for aviation lights are the colors most likely to be affected by color blindness.

@ikluft @aerosavvy No, I get that. My point is that it's strange that we haven't changed this old rule that needlessly disqualifies something like 8% of males.

There are many other color combinations we could use instead that don't have that problem.

@LouisIngenthron @aerosavvy Hahaha! 🤣 🤪 Think about what you're asking. How would you even begin to propose a way to change an international standard that has existed for 175 years, now built into all crewed watercraft, aircraft and spacecraft and all their operators' training in every country? It's far too deeply entrenched.

@ikluft Pretty sure some cultures had to change their entire navigational method from the ground up to meet international standards.

As far as retrofits go, changing a couple light bulbs and instruction book diagrams is hardly the end of the world. You give it a year of transition time where both systems are in effect and grandfather in anything that can't reasonably upgrade in that time (like autonomous satellites).

We shouldn't limit ourselves to subpar solutions just because that's what was done before.
