The New York Times has sued OpenAI arguing that millions of its articles were used to train their models which now compete with the publisher.
There are now so many of these lawsuits I’d assumed the NYT already was suing.
It’s quite clear we will need some sort of Supreme Court ruling on whether training models on copyrighted works is infringement or not. This is basically how search engines work today but they do not compete with the works in question.

@carnage4life I still don't get how they're "competing". Their training data is like two years old, right? What kind of an idiot would get their news from an LLM?

Wouldn't it still be limited to accessing the preview parts of articles that non-subscribers see, though?
@LouisIngenthron ChatGPT using GPT 4 both has more updated training data and can fetch information from the web in real-time.
