How #socia media #algorithms 'flatten' our culture by making #decisions for us. "[There] are equations that measure what you're doing, #surveil #data of all users on these #platforms and then try to predict what each person is most likely to engage w" Kyle Chayka explains. "So rather than having this neat ordered feed you have this feed that's constantly trying to guess what you're going to #click on, what you're going to #read, what you're going to #watch or #listen to." npr.org/2024/01/17/1224955473/

@bespacific Isn't customizing the experience for each person's unique tastes the complete opposite of "flattening" culture?

@bespacific How? Isn't the idea of a "flattened" culture one where everyone likes and watches the same thing? How is that not antithetical to individual customization?

@bespacific @LouisIngenthron It's literally the opposite.

The amount of subcultures that the internet has produced is incredible. And it's purely because people have been able to find content and people who share their unique interests.

Culture now is the opposite of "flat". It's become incredibly fragmented compared to previous decades.
