@annmlipton I would be very curious to find out where they got the training data for the deepfake algorithm. Are these folks' names and voices all really that publicly accessible? Or was it an inside job from someone who could capture their own training material?

@LouisIngenthron @annmlipton For people like CFOs? Yeah, I bet it’s not hard to find them on YouTube, giving talks or being at events or something.

@thatandromeda @annmlipton If the company was huge, maybe. But you need a decent amount of speaking video content to train those algorithms, and from the sound of the article, they did it for the entire board. In 90+% of companies, that would be a very challenging feat, even before you consider that they probably had to have live actors playing the speaking parts during the deception. And then on top of all that, you'd need to know which financial drone was high enough in the hierarchy to carry out this size of transaction independently, but low enough to have an impersonal enough relationship with the board to fall for a fake.

It's really quite an impressive scam.

@LouisIngenthron @annmlipton I dunno. I’m looking at an ars technica article where they started with a few hours of footage (trimmed to the most useful ~10 minutes). I’m not C suite but I have keynoted conferences; finding ten hours of me on YouTube would be easy. So that doesn’t seem like a challenging feat to me for people at this level of prominence.
