Hmmm.... I wonder whether these polling results have anything to do with the #Tories continued attacks on #highereducation?

No, surely not, that would be waaaay toooo cynical

Its almost like they want to ensure only their 'natural' supporters (who can easily afford University) can get a degree - they're not there yet but the direction of travel seems clear....

@ChrisMayLA6 Naah, it's much simpler: the Tories are going after the BNP voter base, because that's who the party belongs to these days. Brexit was an attempt to outflank the hard right (who were stealing Tory voters in the 2000s) but instead it handed the party to the fascist fringe and now the career politicians are trying to deal with it (like the Republicans in the USA pandering to the "Guns! Babies! Jeezus!" crowd).

@cstross

well, certainly that's another explanation that fits the known situation relatively well...

@ChrisMayLA6 The really depressing bit is how Starmer appears to be making a bid for the natural Tory voter base. So: Labour today = 1990s Tories, Tories today = 1990s BNP.

@cstross

This reminds me of a comment Roy Hattersley made in the early years of the Blair period. He observed that although he had not changed *his* views, such was the movement in the governing ideology of the Labour Party that while once he had been on the right of the party, he was now on the left.... this is what 'triangulation' in party politics gets you, when you have a right wing media that needs pandering to...

@ChrisMayLA6 @cstross

I used to be a tory voter back in the days of "red Robbo" and the daily walk-outs at BMC/British Leyland, the dock strikes, coal miners strikes and all the other strikes that crippled the UK in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

The tory party I voted for back then no longer exists, the tories have become a clone of the Nazi party in 1930s Germany. The Labour party now seem to occupy the ground that was once occupied by the tory party that I voted for back in the day and there doesn't appear to be a party of any sort that occupies the the left-wing territory supported by Tony Benn, Michael Foot, Barbara Castle and the rest of the democratic left of that era!

@Paulos_the_fog @cstross

This is where PR would really help; the democratic left (who at present may or may not be a minority section of the LP) could then form a party that could enter, if it made sense, a partnership with the Greens & coalition with a more centerist party to negotiate on what element(s) of their platforms would be deliverable.... it works in other countries

Indeed! Where I currently live, in Luxembourg, almost all governments are coalitions and therefore no extremist, Fascist government like the current tory administration is likely ever to take control of the country!
