Yeah - the Dems in the USA are the equivalent of the the tory party in the UK. Having said that, the tories are doing everything they can to ape the GOP and they are succeeding!
In the USA, I don't think you have an equivalent to the Labour/Socialist parties in Europe.
Americans who come to work in the EU are always surprised how far to the left and liberal most EU nations are. What most of Europe has, is quality of life - good universal healthcare (at low or no cost to the patient), decent social security and benefits provision, 20 days of paid holiday every year plus public holidays like Easter etc (by law, to take when you like), sick pay (by law, where I live, in Luxembourg, sick pay is your normal salary in full!), an excellent life/work balance (the working hours directive says that you cannot be required to work more than 48 hours per week (the employee can waive that right but must do so in writing and can withdraw that waiver at any time) and, by and large, freedom from religious nutters (most people in most EU countries now regard themselves as non-religious).
It has always seemed most peculiar to me that some people devote their lives to companies; neglecting their wives and children to work ludicrous hours. It doesn't seem to occur to them that "companies" don't really exist - they are a virtual concept invented by mankind to allow people to invest in businesses without taking part in the management of the business and without taking any responsibility for the financial well-being, or not, of the company except to the extent of possibly losing the money they invested. Nevertheless the world is now dominated by global multinational companies; particularly banks. This is a form of collective insanity!
Of course the biggest form of collective insanity is actually money itself - another virtual concept and one for which man is often prepared to kill or be killed.
