a weird thing about mastodon is that people seem to assume that just because feds are relatively small right now that they have the possibility to become "communities" as opposed to "platforms". I cannot overstate how impossible this is and also how believing it will set up people to feel harmed by their "communities" of 1000+ people

I'm also an optimist in that i hope that mastodon has the possibility of reaching similar numbers of users that twitter has, but there has to be an understanding that these are not all people with inherent familiarities. they're not. people on here are just as much strangers as anywhere else and it worries me to see folks assuming community norms are even possible to uphold in groups beyond like 100 people

i'm not talking about "fuck nazis" because that's not a 'norm' as much as a guiding principle of sorts, i'm talking about "xyz things should always be CW'd" which is both materially near-impossible to enforce and also extremely subjective, in more permissible feds that don't have rules about that

@videodante ok see the thing is tho. "fuck nazis" is literally the same. eugen can say "fuck nazis" all he wants but nazis can (and probably do) still prop up mastodon servers of their own. you can't stop them. it's up to individual instance owners to 1) ban nazis and 2) blacklist those instances so at the very least they can reach as little of the federation as possible
