@Ryder in the case of dogs and humans, I'd say it's innate but not focused on the bouncy ball. That's a means. I think the end is inducing play behaviors, chasing each other, eye contact, teasing, etc. With my dog, all this feels natural, and it doesn't seem to matter what the toy is. Socks are preferred, of course, but anything will do. 🙂
